Loyalty: The Missing Ingredient

November 8, 2023

This past Sunday, we continued through the 10 Commandments, in our series "The Big 10". The 7th commandment to not commit adultery was up and we saw how there's a principle of loyalty that lies within this command. But this loyalty goes beyond just being physically faithful to our spouses. It is also about practicing faithfulness with our friends, our family and even our God.

Loyalty is the missing ingredient
for a love that lasts.

Loyalty should not just be a state of being, any more than God's faithfulness is simply a state of His being. That's because it is not just who God is, it's what God does. In the same way, loyal should not just be who we are, it should be what we do. Loyalty should be something we practice. And like many things, that starts with us coming to God and doing what he has called us to do.

Psalms 51:10 (NLT)

Create in me a clean heart, O God.
Renew a loyal spirit within me.

1 Kings 8:61 (NKJV)

Let your heart therefore be loyal to the Lord our God, to walk in His statutes and keep His commandments, as at this day.”

And of course, we need to remember that just as James 4:3-4 calls our loyalty towards God into question, it also gives us the remedy immediately after.

James 4:7-10 (NKJV)

7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.
